MISCONCEPTION  ABOUT RECYCLED CLAIMS

To be real recycled the product must be 100% post-consumer recycled. This means that the paper it is made from paper that has left the paper mill, being purchased and used. After the paper is no longer able to be used for it’s intended purpose the paper is collected and reconstituted into paper again. Most of the paper collected is low grade paper scrap like cardboard cartons , newspapers, magazines etc. When recycled into paper and cardboard again faint glimmers of odd coloured material can be seen upon very close inspection. If white clean paper is collected it is regarded as high grade paper scrap that is suitable for making white paper products or white lining of brown recycled paper. This high grade white paper scrap is in short supply and sells for over $300 per ton. As wood chip costs almost nothing in comparison this scrap is not usually used to make white paper in Australia as there is only one white copy paper and brown kraft paper mill left in Australia in the Gippsland forest. All white copy papers under various brand names largely to avoid the Wilderness Society Boycott Reflex pledge are only made at this mill.

TRICK WORDING TO INFER PRODUCTS ARE RECYCLED WHEN NOT

Often through trick wording you can get the impression it is 100% recycled when not. A few examples are: ” 100% Australian recycled paper”. Grammatically the 100% refers to Australian not the % recycled. “Use recycled brown bags”. This does not mean that the bag it is printed on is recycled. ” Recyclable” this just means it can be recycled , not that the bag is made from recycled paper. If a product just claims to be “recycled” it does not necessarily mean that the paper has left the mill at all. Paper if faulty is put back trough the will again. The paper slurry is recycled as well. Both are standard virgin paper manufacturer methodology. Thin brown paper is not real recycled as when the paper is recycled the paper needs to be thicker to have strength. Using these pretend recycled products is adding to our climate emergency.
